A rare and characterful antique Victorian candle wick trimmer, stamped “VR ATKIN,” dating to the 19th century.
This beautifully engineered piece combines scissors with a built-in snuffer box, designed to trim candle wicks while catching the burnt residue. Before the invention of self-consuming candle wicks in the mid-19th century, such tools were essential for maintaining a clean, steady flame and preventing smoke.
Crafted in steel with an elegant, sculptural form, the trimmer features looped handles, a hinged cutting blade, and a receptacle box to contain the trimmed wick. The pointed end was used to adjust or lift the wick during use.
The “VR” mark (Victoria Regina) places this piece firmly in the Victorian period (1837–1901), while the Atkin name suggests manufacture in Sheffield—renowned for high-quality steel goods.
