Description
A lovely vintage Japanese porcelain covered tea vessel dating from the middle decades of the 20th century.
The cylindrical porcelain body has been decorated with a wonderfully loose, watery blue ground, overlaid with large stylised peony-like flowers, leaves and buds. Soft shades of mauve, pale green, pink and yellow contrast beautifully with the blue, while raised white outlines give the floral decoration an unusual tactile, almost three-dimensional quality.
The matching lid repeats the floral decoration and has a raised circular section which allows it to sit securely over the vessel. Painted characters appear on its underside, although I have not attributed these to a particular Japanese kiln or maker.
The combination of traditional Japanese porcelain techniques with the soft colour palette gives the piece a distinctly mid-century character.
A lovely decorative object in its own right, but particularly attractive incorporated into a collection of Japanese ceramics or blue-and-white porcelain.
