Description
A beautifully decorative vintage Japanese porcelain ginger jar, probably dating from the latter half of the 20th century.
The rounded porcelain body is decorated with an abundant pattern of scrolling flowers and foliage in rich cobalt and softer shades of blue against a creamy-white ground. Fine gilded lines pick out the petals, leaves and curling stems, with further blue and gilt bands around the neck and foot.
The jar retains its matching domed porcelain lid, decorated with further flowers and foliage and finished with a rounded blue knop.
Pieces of this type were produced in Japan for the Western decorative export market during the post-war period, drawing freely upon traditional East Asian porcelain forms and decorative motifs. Comparable marked Japanese blue-and-white and gilt porcelain jars are generally dated to the 1960s–80s.
