Description
A wonderfully decorative vintage Japanese porcelain bowl, richly decorated in underglaze cobalt blue against a warm white porcelain ground.
The interior centres on an abundant arrangement of chrysanthemums, peonies and flowering branches, surrounded by a series of individually decorated geometric panels inspired by traditional Japanese textile and decorative patterns.
A softly scalloped profile gives the bowl an elegant shape, while the rim is picked out with a fine iron-brown edge — a traditional decorative detail found on Japanese blue-and-white porcelain for centuries.
The restrained exterior provides a lovely contrast to the extraordinarily detailed interior, with small blue floral sprays decorating the otherwise white body.
Probably dating from the latter half of the 20th century, this is a particularly attractive example of vintage Japanese blue-and-white decorative porcelain.
Beautiful displayed alone on a console or coffee table, or incorporated into a collected arrangement of blue-and-white ceramics.
