Description
A wonderfully decorative vintage Japanese porcelain bowl, probably produced in the Arita tradition during the mid-20th century.
The unusual shaped square bowl is densely decorated in underglaze cobalt blue. At its centre is an abundant arrangement of flowers and foliage, surrounded by individually patterned panels inspired by traditional Japanese textile and geometric motifs.
The quieter exterior provides a lovely contrast, with individual floral sprays painted against the white porcelain body. A repeating blue border decorates the shaped foot, while a fine iron-brown line follows the undulating rim — a decorative feature with a long history in Japanese Arita porcelain.
An underglaze-blue maker’s or kiln mark is present inside the bowl, although this has not currently been identified.
A particularly attractive piece for a collection of blue-and-white ceramics and lovely simply displayed on a console, coffee table or open shelving.
