Description
A wonderfully decorative vintage hardwood serving tray, probably dating from the first half of the 20th century.
The substantial rectangular tray has a large recessed central serving area surrounded by an intricately hand-carved border of scrolling leaves and foliage. A pair of integral cut-out handles are incorporated beautifully into the carved border.
The timber has developed a particularly attractive aged surface, with variations in tone, old scratches and marks from use adding considerable character.
The style of carving is suggestive of Indian and Anglo-Indian decorative woodwork, although the tray is unmarked and its precise origin is unknown.
As useful as it is decorative, it would make a lovely drinks tray on an ottoman or coffee table, or simply propped against a wall as part of a layered kitchen or dining-room display.
