Five authentic hand-blown glass fishing floats, each displaying the deep olive-green coloration traditionally associated with historic Japanese fishing floats.
Originally produced for commercial fishing fleets, glass floats were attached to nets and longlines to provide buoyancy at sea. Their simple spherical form was designed for practicality, yet over time they have become highly prized decorative objects appreciated for their sculptural beauty and fascinating maritime history.
Each float exhibits the subtle irregularities, bubbles, and character expected from hand-blown glass. The rich green colour results from recycled bottle glass, traditionally sake bottles and other available glass sources, a common practice among Japanese float manufacturers during the early and mid-20th century.
Displayed individually, in a bowl, grouped on shelving, or arranged within a coastal interior scheme, these floats bring texture, history, and a wonderful sense of maritime heritage to a space.
