Vintage Blue and White Floral Jug

Description

A particularly pretty vintage English ceramic jug, decorated with exuberant sprays of flowers in varying shades of blue against a warm ivory-white ground.

The tall, gently tapering body has a wonderfully simple shape, with a generous pouring lip and substantial loop handle. The botanical decoration combines large blowsy blooms with smaller garden flowers and trailing foliage, ranging from soft powder blue through to rich cobalt.

Rather than covering the entire surface, the flowers are arranged in generous sprays around the body, leaving areas of the warm cream ground visible. Smaller floral details continue around the rim and onto the handle.

The underside carries a printed crown mark together with “MADE IN ENGLAND”, confirming English manufacture. The manufacturer has not been identified and we prefer to leave the attribution open rather than assign the jug to a particular pottery without supporting evidence.

Probably dating from the middle decades of the 20th century, it is a lovely example of traditional English blue-and-white decorative ware.

Originally a practical serving jug, its scale and shape make it particularly good for flowers. Fill it with blowsy roses, dahlias or a loose arrangement of foliage, or use it simply as a decorative piece on a dresser, kitchen table or mantelpiece.
