Description
A beautifully detailed antique musical jewellery box dating from the late Victorian to early Edwardian period, featuring richly decorated Tunbridge-style floral and geometric marquetry throughout.
The rectangular box stands on shaped bracket feet and is decorated with intricate floral borders, checkerboard banding and an elaborate central cartouche to the lid. Opening the lid reveals a fitted oval mirror and two sliding jewellery trays which automatically separate to expose the central storage compartment beneath.
The interior retains its original blush-pink quilted silk lining, creating an elegant contrast against the darker timber exterior. The box is fitted with its original mechanical musical movement, operated via the winding mechanism beneath, allowing it to play a melody when opened.
The overall aesthetic reflects the Arts & Crafts fascination with decorative marquetry and the enduring popularity of Tunbridge Ware during the late nineteenth century.
Equally suited to use as a jewellery box, keepsake box or decorative display piece, it offers both practical storage and considerable visual appeal.
Please note: the two internal sliding trays are currently detached from their hinges. The hinges are present, but the mechanism will require attention. Priced accordingly.
