Description
An attractive pair of antique covered serving tureens produced by Wedgwood & Co. of Tunstall, Staffordshire, and decorated in the celebrated Asiatic Pheasants pattern.
Finished in a delicate pale blue transfer print on an ivory ground, each tureen is richly decorated with the floral motifs that made Asiatic Pheasants one of the most enduring and recognisable patterns in British ceramics. Despite the name, the design contains little in the way of actual pheasants; instead it combines romantic floral sprays and oriental-inspired decorative elements that reflected Victorian fascination with East Asian art and design.
The tureens feature elegant domed covers with moulded foliate handles, shaped side handles and raised feet. The pattern continues seamlessly across both base and cover, demonstrating the quality of production associated with Staffordshire pottery during the late Victorian period.
Highly decorative yet still practical, these pieces work beautifully as dining table centrepieces, display pieces, planters or decorative storage vessels.
