Description

A beautiful antique English mahogany document or deed box, dating from the 19th century and probably the mid-Victorian period, circa 1830–1870.

Made from richly figured mahogany, the substantial rectangular box is finished with brass corner mounts, an inset oval brass cartouche to the lid and a traditional brass escutcheon. The brass fittings were not simply decorative: reinforced corners were particularly practical on boxes designed to protect and transport important papers and documents.

The box opens on brass hinges to reveal a spacious interior which has been relined at a later date with a delicate pink and neutral floral paper. The later lining gives the box a rather lovely decorative quality and makes it particularly appealing for contemporary use.

Originally intended for storing correspondence, deeds or other important papers, it would now make an elegant decorative storage box for letters, photographs, keepsakes, jewellery, textiles or other collections. Equally beautiful simply displayed on a chest of drawers, console or coffee table.

The mahogany has developed a wonderful warm colour and patina, with the knocks, marks and variations expected from a piece that has been used and handled for well over a century. The brass also retains an attractive aged finish.
