Late Victorian / Edwardian Mahogany Shield-Form Dressing Table Mirror

£78.00

A beautifully shaped antique mahogany dressing mirror dating from around 1900, with a shield-form mirror held between elegant swept supports and raised on four scrolling feet.

The mirror pivots between the uprights and is held in position by its wonderfully decorative aged brass adjustment screws.

The mahogany has developed a lovely mellow colour and the older mirror plate has scattered foxing and silvering marks which add considerably to its character.

A particularly decorative piece for a dressing table, chest of drawers or bathroom.

Description

A wonderfully elegant antique mahogany dressing-table mirror, dating from the late Victorian or Edwardian period around 1900.

The large shield-shaped mirror is set within a moulded mahogany frame and suspended between a pair of beautifully swept uprights. Decorative aged-brass side adjusters allow the mirror to pivot, while a shaped stretcher and four elegant scrolling feet complete the unusually graceful open-frame design.

The mahogany has developed a warm, mellow colour with the scratches, rubbing and variations in finish expected from more than a century of use. The older mirror plate also has scattered areas of foxing and silvering loss, adding to its wonderfully timeworn character.

Unlike many Edwardian dressing mirrors, which sit above rather heavy drawer bases, the open construction of this example gives it a particularly light and sculptural quality.

A beautiful and useful antique for a bedroom or dressing room, but equally effective used decoratively on a console, chest of drawers or bathroom vanity.

Date: c.1890–1910
