Description
This impressive natural abalone shell is a wonderful example of one of the ocean’s most prized natural treasures. The interior displays the characteristic nacre, or mother-of-pearl, for which abalone shells are celebrated, producing a captivating play of iridescent colour that shifts between soft greens, silvers, blush pinks, violets and gold depending on the light. Abalone shells have been valued for ornamentation and decoration for thousands of years due to this remarkable natural lustre.
The exterior retains its beautifully textured natural form, with the distinctive row of respiratory holes that are characteristic of abalone species (genus Haliotis). These shells are often referred to as “ear shells” because of their gently elongated oval shape. The thick nacreous interior develops over many years as the mollusc deposits layers of calcium carbonate, creating both exceptional strength and the famous rainbow-like iridescence.
This specimen has a particularly attractive display quality, balancing rugged natural texture on the exterior with a luminous polished interior. Whether styled on a coffee table, console, bookshelf or mantelpiece, it provides a timeless organic focal point that works equally well in coastal, contemporary, eclectic and collected interiors.
