Early Georgian Mahogany parcel gilt Toilet Mirror

Description

A beautifully proportioned antique dressing table mirror crafted in richly figured mahogany and dating from the late Victorian to Edwardian period, circa 1890–1915.

This elegant tabletop mirror features a rectangular swing plate with gently rounded corners, mounted between shaped mahogany supports and secured with original brass adjustment knobs. The mirror can be tilted to the desired angle, a practical feature that made these mirrors a staple of well-appointed dressing rooms and bedrooms during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Particularly attractive is the decorative gilt slip surrounding the mirror plate, hand-carved with a repeating foliate pattern which adds warmth and refinement against the rich reddish-brown tones of the mahogany. The mirror stands on graceful shaped feet connected by a stretcher rail, giving it a light and elegant appearance whilst maintaining stability.

The timber displays the beautiful grain and colour associated with quality mahogany furniture of the period, and the original mirror plate retains the subtle signs of age and character collectors look for in genuine antique examples.

Victorian and Edwardian swing mirrors such as this were commonly found atop dressing tables and washstands, designed to provide a practical yet decorative focal point within the bedroom. Examples with adjustable brass fittings, shaped supports, and decorative gilt slips were particularly popular during the transition from the Victorian era into the lighter, more refined Edwardian aesthetic.
