Description
Antique Late Qing Chinese Blue & White Porcelain Prunus Ginger Jar with Cover, c.1880–1910
A beautiful antique Chinese porcelain ginger jar dating from the late Qing dynasty, probably around the closing decades of the 19th century or very beginning of the 20th.
Of traditional rounded form, the jar is hand decorated in rich underglaze cobalt blue with flowering prunus branches reserved against the darker ground. The loose variation of the cobalt and freely drawn branches give the piece considerably more character than later mechanically decorated examples.
The jar is accompanied by a matching domed porcelain cover decorated with further blossom. The recessed glazed underside bears a double concentric blue-ring mark, a marking convention derived from earlier Kangxi-period porcelain and subsequently used extensively on Chinese blue-and-white wares during the 19th century.
The unglazed foot shows attractive age-related wear and discolouration consistent with an antique piece.
A wonderfully decorative example of antique Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, equally at home amongst a traditional collection of Asian ceramics or used as a single statement piece on a mantel, console or bookshelf.
