Breakfast Tray

Description

A beautifully designed vintage folding breakfast tray featuring a distinctive curved silhouette, rich dark timber finish, and ingenious space-saving construction.

The tray unfolds to create a stable raised surface supported by two folding end panels, each incorporating bold geometric cut-outs that give the piece a subtle Mid-Century Modern character. When not in use, the supports fold neatly beneath the tray, creating an exceptionally slim profile for storage.

Originally inspired by traditional Butler’s Trays and campaign furniture, folding trays such as this were designed to provide a portable surface that could easily be moved, stored, and deployed wherever needed. Butler’s trays first appeared in Georgian England during the mid-18th century and evolved into a wide variety of portable serving and occasional furniture throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

This particular example appears to date from the mid-to-late 20th century, likely c.1960s–1980s, and combines practical functionality with an attractive decorative presence. The sculptural supports and elegant shaped apron give it a more contemporary feel than traditional butler’s trays, making it equally suitable for modern interiors.

Ideal as:

• Breakfast-in-bed tray
• Laptop or reading table
• Sofa serving tray
• Occasional side table
• Cocktail or drinks station
• Decorative display platform

The tray folds flat within seconds, making it particularly useful in smaller homes where occasional furniture needs to be stored efficiently.
