Description

This magnificent spiny shell is a superb example of the extraordinary forms created by nature. Characterised by its elaborate branching spines, deeply sculpted ridges and contrasting ivory, cream and dark chocolate colouring, it possesses a striking presence that rivals many contemporary decorative sculptures.

The shell’s beautifully polished aperture reveals subtle flashes of mother-of-pearl, while the heavily textured exterior displays the distinctive frond-like projections that have made murex shells highly prized by collectors, natural historians and interior designers for centuries.

Based on its form and ornamentation, this specimen is likely from the Murex family (Muricidae), possibly related to the Ramose Murex (Chicoreus ramosus) or a closely related Indo-Pacific species. These shells are renowned for their elaborate spines and architectural forms, with some specimens growing to over 30cm in length.

The dramatic silhouette makes this shell particularly effective as a standalone decorative object on shelves, coffee tables, consoles or within a cabinet of curiosities. Its organic geometry complements both traditional and contemporary interiors, adding texture, movement and a sense of collected sophistication.
