This magnificent spiny shell is a superb example of the extraordinary forms created by nature. The shell’s beautifully polished aperture reveals subtle flashes of mother-of-pearl, while the heavily textured exterior displays the distinctive frond-like projections that have made murex shells highly prized by collectors, natural historians and interior designers for centuries.
Based on its form and ornamentation, this specimen is likely from the Murex family (Muricidae), possibly related to the Ramose Murex (Chicoreus ramosus) or a closely related Indo-Pacific species. These shells are renowned for their elaborate spines and architectural forms, with some specimens growing to over 30cm in length.
