Description
An attractive and increasingly sought-after graduated set of three Victorian ironstone jugs, decorated in the classic Japanese Imari style that became enormously popular with English potteries during the nineteenth century.
Each jug is beautifully adorned with hand-finished chinoiserie landscapes, flowering peonies and stylised oriental architectural scenes, framed by deep cobalt blue reserves enriched with gilt decoration. The palette of iron red, cobalt blue, turquoise green and soft pink is characteristic of the celebrated “Japan” patterns produced by the Staffordshire potteries during the Victorian era.
The three jugs graduate elegantly in size and retain their original decorative impact when displayed as a group. The bodies exhibit the fine crazing expected of antique ironstone and contribute to their authentic period character.
