Description
A stunning example of 19th-century craftsmanship, this Victorian rosewood writing slope is both a practical writing tool and a beautiful decorative piece. Crafted from richly grained rosewood, the box features elegant brass edging and an ornate inlaid cartouche and escutcheon, both classic features of mid-to-late Victorian design.
This writing box opens to reveal its original dark green velvet writing surface, bordered with gold tooled detailing. The velvet shows age-appropriate wear but retains its character and function. Underneath the writing surfaces are hidden storage compartments, perfect for keeping letters or personal documents safely tucked away.
Inside the upper section, you’ll find a divided pen tray, inkwell compartments, and two small lidded sections, complete with turned ivory pulls. The interior lid also opens, revealing further hidden storage and an elegant internal division that would have once held correspondence or writing supplies. These secret compartments are a classic hallmark of writing slopes from this era.
The underside retains its original green baize lining, showing signs of wear consistent with age, further authenticating its Victorian origin. While the lock mechanism is present, the key is not included.
This is a beautiful collector’s item for lovers of antique stationery, or a sophisticated desk accessory for those who appreciate old-world charm with functional elegance.
