A handsome decorative convex wall mirror, crafted in the style of the celebrated English Regency bullseye mirrors of the early nineteenth century.
The circular frame is finished in a rich antiqued bronze-gilt tone and embellished with a ring of raised decorative bosses surrounding the convex mirror plate. An ebonised inner moulding and gilt beaded detail provide attractive contrast and create a strong architectural presence despite the mirror’s relatively compact size.
Convex mirrors, often referred to as “bullseye” mirrors, became highly fashionable during the Regency period. Their gently curved glass was valued not only for decorative effect but also for its ability to reflect a wider field of view than a flat mirror. Historically they were frequently placed in entrance halls, dining rooms and drawing rooms where they helped distribute light and provided a dramatic focal point.
This example appears to be a high-quality twentieth-century interpretation of those earlier Regency designs, retaining many of the characteristic features including the circular form, convex plate, decorative spheres and contrasting dark inner slip. The mirror has developed an attractive aged patina and presents beautifully as a standalone decorative object or as part of a gallery wall arrangement.
Particularly effective in hallways, cloakrooms, libraries, studies, country house interiors and contemporary spaces seeking a touch of classical elegance.
